Earlier this month, I enjoyed the honor of MC'ing the Northern Virginia Tea Party Volunteer Appreciation Banquet. Here's a clip from my closing comments.

Leslie, thank you for your efforts in the Tea Parties. It is potentially the most important movement in American since Ronald Reagan. 1994 was a brief breath of fresh air, but we need to step it up in every way. We need conservatives and libertarians in office who will push back and overweening, overpowerful, abusive Federal government.

We are still hoping to get out from under the remains of the 28 inches of snow we had here, but what about the DAILY DC SNOW JOB perpetrated upon the American People? Pork Pie in the Trillions, and Future Generations SOLD OUT, MORTGAGED AND ENSLAVED. I say, it is time to START DIGGING OUT! We Won’t Be Fooled Again. We Need to start by educating the People about the Constitution and a little thing called Limited Government and Enumerated Powers! Fortunately, the Democrats are facilitating the task of re-educating a populace that has been indoctrinated in government schools. They are pissing People off, and folks are actually beginning to learn what it was that started in 1776. As Franklin replied, when asked what kind of government they had created, “A Republic, if you can keep it.” The only possible way for that to happen is for the People to be the Watch Dogs. In Virginia, we are beginning on that process by replacing Tom Periello with Michael McPadden in the 5th District. whose campaign is based upon here’s a new concept Liberty, and Personal Responsibility. Check out his website at www.mcpaddenforcongress.com We have had a potential disaster forced upon us in the 5th district, but we are going to turn lemons into lemonade. WE are not going to tolerate a ridiculous situation in which the party nominee could win less than 20% of the total vote, with 80% of the vote being solidly conservative, but split 6 ways. There is a growing movement in the 5th district for a CONSERVATIVE CONVENTION to select OUR nominee who will face Robert Hurt in the primary. Please go to McPadden’s website. Check him out. The New Right starts in the 5th District. LIBERTY WINS!~

5th District Republican Leaders Trash Public Request from 6 out of 7 Republican candidates in the 5th District for a convention rather than a primary. They also spurned the request of Virginia Tea Parties for a a convention. Instead they opted for a primary, which will divide the conservative vote 6 ways, and will allow a big government Republican to win with less than 20% of the vote. Democrats are also invited to vote en masse in this Republican Primary.
Candidate Michael McPadden (www.mcpaddenforcongress.com) is calling for a Conservative Republican Pre-Primary Convention to select a conservative candidate prior to the primary to run against the RHINO candidate.

Here is his press release:

North Garden, VA 01/04/10 Republican Congressional Candidate - and recently endorsed Liberty Candidate 2010 - Mike McPadden is calling on his fellow conservative candidates to join him in endorsing and supporting a "US House of Representatives VA-5 Conservative Convention" to nominate one conservative to run against Robert Hurt in the June 8th Republican Fifth District Primary.

Inside the Fifth District the idea of a Conservative Convention is gaining traction. Outside the Fifth District national grass roots organizers have offered to fund the Conservative Fifth District Convention in March or April.

According to Mike McPadden, what has precipitated this call is that in December, Tea Party Patriots, Grass Root Republicans, and other conservatives spoke loud and clear to have a nominating convention instead of a very costly primary. Unfortunately their hopes were dashed when the leadership of the Fifth District voted by secret ballot for a primary.

McPadden says, "We must do everything we can to ensure out in the open that our next Congressman is a strict Constitutionalist who upholds the conservative values of lower taxes and limited government."

Convinced that uniting in a Conservative Convention will bring about a positive outcome, McPadden states, "The grass roots of the Republican Party will have their voices heard and their votes counted. Second, deliberately narrowing the Fifth District field to two candidates will increase the odds that a conservative will win the nomination. And third, it could turn the tide of moderate leanings from within the Republican Party and restore the 'Big Tent' party of Reagan to its conservative moorings."
