Way to go, Dr. No!

Following the lead of Tom "Dr. No" Coburn (R-Okla.), Senate Republicans yesterday found the vertebrae to block Majority Leader Harry Reid's omnibus spending bill. This $10-Billion monstrosity comprised three dozen bills that would have transferred taxpayers' hard-earned money to free-loaders from the United Nations to an orchid greenhouse.

Led by Sen. Coburn of Oklahoma, Republicans prevented the 398-page monument to the absuridity of the welfare state from reaching a final vote.

"Next time you see someone in a wheelchair at home, explain to them about how you voted against moving forward on something that may get them out of that wheelchair," Sen. Reid whined. The bill's many would-be beneficiaries included paralysis researchers.

I think James Madison in 1794 offerred the best response to such demagoguery:

“I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents.”

That ought to be an acid test for everything that goes through Congress: "Show me, in the Constitution, where it says we're allowed to do that."

Tenth Amendment FTW.
