Michelle Obama: Proud at Last

“Hope is making a comeback and, let me tell you, for the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country. Not just because Barack is doing well, but I think people are hungry for change,” Michelle Obama delcared during a Milwaukee rally, according to the Boston Herald. “I have seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic common issues and it has made me proud.”

For the first time in her adult life? Michelle Obama was born in 1964, meaning that she turned 18 in 1982. So for 26 years, she hasn't been proud of the United States of America? Not when the Soviet Union collapsed and the Berlin Wall came tumbling down? Not when thousands of young people joined the armed services and scores of volunteers gave of themselves to rescue the wounded, recover the dead, and comfort the bereaved in the wake of the worst terrorist attack in history?

She's gone through adulthood never feeling proud on the Fourth of July, singing "The Star-Spangled Banner", listening to the Overture of 1812, watching the fireworks, and seeing herself and her contemporaries linked through two centuries to America's birth? Never feeling pride in America's heritage, in the first modern nation founded on republican ideals? Never feeling pride in the Declaration of Independence, in the Constitution, in its Bill of Rights?

Maybe she's the one who should be plagiarizing her speeches.

“I have seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic common issues and it has made me proud.”

So she finds pride not in the free exercise of democracy but rather in front of crowds of sheep who need to be told how and what to think?

I guess we know now why Obama won't wear a US flag lapel pin - his wife won't let him.

Uh, 1812 Overture was by Tchaikovsky, written for the defense of Moscow from Napoleon....

Anonymous, thank you for your comment. Tchaikovsky originally composed what later became a staple of Fourth-of-July celebrations for Moscow's 70th-anniversary commemoration of Russia's victory over Napoleon and the French.

It's just the bit of juicy meat that the blood-thirsty slander machine is pining for in the face of an all but assured republican massacre in the upcoming election.
All you conservatives have to look forward to is some Karl Rovian tactic to strike fear in the heart of the people, and try to coerce them into voting another neocon to the Whitehouse.
True patriots are now living with eyes wide open, unwilling to follow the neoconservative politics of fear. Even if the Obama momentum is somehow slowed by the harmless comments made by Michelle, democrats can still look forward to having the first woman US president.
The game is over, and the American people will no longer stand for governance by fear. It's time to wake up. This country will once again be run by and for the people, not the corporations.

We need to unite, not divide, for United We Stand, Divided We Fall.
Join the light side republicans, we welcome you with open arms.

Assuming that comment #4 was written by an actual person and isn't simply the product of a Bush Derangement Syndrome buzzword-generating algorithm, I would like to respond:

As a conservative, I look forward to the Obama campaign continuing to shoot itself in the foot, and I look forward to Clinton's meltdown when Obama wins the nomination anyway, and I look forward to the widespread (although only on the left) hysteria and rending of garments that will occur when the Dems lose yet another Presidental election this year.

As far as the "politics of fear" go, the only things I'm afraid of is an empty suit like Obama being swept into the Presidency on the shoulders of empty-headed zombies chanting nothing more than "change", or a baggage-laden Clinton trying to enact a socialist agenda that would surpass Castro.

I don't vote conservative because I'm afraid of anything, or feel coerced; I vote conservative because I am capable of critical thinking. You should try it. Keep reading this blog and maybe you'll learn a thing or two.

It appears that sense more than a twit's is necessary to understand the plain statement by Mrs. Obama. While I would like to agree with her, and I've been an adult twice as long as she has been, I cannot say that I've ever experienced pride in the United States of America. But ... that experience for me may not be far off. We're nearly ready to elect either a woman or an African American. IF that happens, then I will finally have a sense of pride.

This from a white, 65-year-old American man.

Taking comments and things out of context is fun! Like the news report where Bush appears above the headline "Bush:One of the worst disasters to hit US." LOL

Asked by WJAR-TV if she would like to clarify her comment, Obama replied that she has been struck by the number of people going to rallies and watching debates, as well as record voter turnouts.

"What I was clearly talking about was that I'm proud in how Americans are engaging in the political process," she said.

she'sapistol, I thought the Herald article and Ms. Carbone's post did a fine job of explaining the context of Ms. Obama's remarks. Let's see... standing in front of a crowd of supporters, at a political rally for her husband, she goes and says "for the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country."

The article doesn't mention the crowd's response, but I'm willing to bet that it was more mindless droning of "Yes we can" and "change!" rather than shock and surprise or the sound of chirping crickets.

What contextual spin could possibly make that not look like she, (and by extension, her husband and his supporters) loathe this country, its principles, its traditions, and its culture?

And getting a second chance from the MSM to "clarify" your inane comments must also be fun, but no conservative (or Republican) will ever have that experience.

Sorry, she'sapistol, but you're not helping your argument with this: "What I was clearly talking about was that I'm proud in how Americans are engaging in the political process," she said.

As if this is the first time in her "adult life" that people have taken an interest in electoral politics? Really? Is she that clueless?

"Tessie's Dad", you nailed it.

I don't feel fear in my politics, I vote conservative because of my thoughts on the issues. I do, however, worry about the bandwagon that seems to be a big part of the Obamamania: empty promises fueled by an impatient "I want what I want, and I want it NOW, and I want it without having to work for it" mentality.

And it's amazing to me that people can claim to have NEVER felt a sense of pride in America. Sounds similar to the kind of exaggerations used by temperamental adolescents, saying things like "I NEVER get what I want!"

And sorry, "She'saPistol", I can't swallow the spin that Michelle Obama, a Harvard and Princeton-educated lawyer reading a prepared speech, mis-spoke in her comments. Twice. She knew exactly what she was saying, and was simply embarrassed that the childish nature of her statement was correctly perceived. The whole Obama campaign is tapping into the Bush Derangement Syndrome as well as the fatigue that many feel for the current administration (even I fall prey to the latter).

At this stage in her life and in her husband's campaign Mrs. Obama should recognize the importance of avoiding such absolute statements. Sure as an African American she is proud of the level of interest in the political process especially by African Americans who have sometimes shown little interest in voting, especially in the South but she has to be smart about her utterances. She has a foot in mouth problem.

Before you all hysterically attack Ms. Obama's supposedly unpatriotic speech, I think you should LISTEN to what she ACTUALLY said. If you do, you will know that she stated that it was the first time she was "REALLY proud".

I see nothing wrong with this at all. Indeed, I do not think you can fault her for the level of her proudness YOU think she should feel; and from this, denigrate her level of patriotism, love of country, etc.

Importantly, asserting that pride equals patriotism is a bogus equality. Indded, I would posit that true patriotism could be shown by having shame and wanting to change shameful behavior.

Remember, pride always comes before the fall.

anonymous, before you hysterically condemn those of us who can read and do research, why don't you watch this video:

http://stoptheaclu.com/archives/2008/02/18/is-michelle-obama-the-next-teresa-heinz-kerry/

Stop engaging in revisionist history. She said it. I'll even give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she probably meant to include "really, " but she didn't. Lying about it, and claiming that NBC, CNN, CBS, et al. got it wrong is deceptive and dishonest. Is deception and dishonesty what we should expect from an Obama administration? (If so, it's good to find out now, isn't it?)

leave michelle obama alone she has a right to her own opinion and her opinion is that nothing this country has done like go into a meaningless war or enslaved human beings has made her proud and personally i agree are you gonna write a whole blog about me too? get a life.
